Congratulations, John Hood, the “controversial” opinion about Radiohead’s live performance that you’ve been told to have by The Guardian to gain readership is the most irritating thing I have read all week.
I was going to write a deconstruction of all the reasons why it sucks (do so-called ‘Stadium Rock Bands’ have to play a setlist of their greatest hits by definition, or else disappoint their “fans”? I assume, since you didn’t even mention that they played ‘Meeting In The Aisle’, that you haven’t bought a Radiohead album since Pablo Honey? Why does this newspaper continue to opt for a “grumpy uncle” review of all current music when this could easily have been a great piece of journalism about a 24-song setlist which included a debut of two incredible new tracks and one of the best encore’s ever? Why have you spent the first two sentences committing grammatical suicide? etc…), but I am 100% convinced that he is already vividly aware of all these reasons (perhaps not the grammatical error), and that is why it’s so irritating.
Quit ruining music, The Guardian.
Click the screencap from ‘Meeting People Is Easy’ to read John’s review. Then watch ‘Meeting People Is Easy’, if you haven’t before. It’s something that I always mentally flip back to when confronted with the woeful situation of a band having a huge back catalogue of stunning songs, yet are recurrently berated for not playing their one biggest hit 24 times in a row…
